Episode Four: Shadow from the Past

Dorian flipped through his financial books, double checking his accounts. Yes, he paid someone to look after his money—several someones, in fact—but it never hurt to be prudent. He glanced at his computer screen, comparing the spreadsheets sent by his accountants against his own handwritten books. When had handwriting gone out of style? Letters were replaced by emails, bills by text notifications, and if his barrister asked him one more time when he was going to acquire a cellphone, he was going to fire the man. He had a computer and a laptop. Wasn't that good enough?

When the his private line rang, Dorian didn't even think. Whoever called the phone in his study was some who knew him. He simply reached out and lifted the phone. "Hello?"

"Dorian, my beautiful boy, it's time to pay your debts." Dorian froze in his chair. That voice. Cultured and vicious all at the same time. He hadn't hear that voice since—

No. He didn't want to go back there. He didn't want to think about it, remember it. It was the past. Dead and buried. He shook his head, as if the man on the other end of the line could see him. He closed his eyes, and as soon as he did, the memory came rushing back to him.

"I came as soon as I could." Henry stepped inside as Dorian shut the door. "Your manservant said it was urgent, and at this time of night, it must be."

Dorian looked up at the ceiling. "Basil is here."

Henry laughed. "The old man still hungers for your flesh, even at his age."

"He's dead." Dorian's heart ached to speak the words, his old lover reduced to nothing more than cold, dead flesh. "I killed him."

Henry's smile faded. "You did? My dear boy, that... that must have been quite an experience."

Dorian averted his eyes, his stomach twisting with guilt and regret. "I don't know what to do."

"Lucky for you, I know just the thing." Henry shed his jacket and smiled at Dorian. The smile was cold, Henry's eyes glittering in the lamplight. "Do you remember that sweet chemist's assistant? The one you seduced some time ago?"

The faces all ran together in Dorian's mind. How many men had he seduced since that damned day when he'd cut his hand in Basil's studio? He'd long since lost count. "I seduced only one chemist's assistant?" He laughed, the sound flat and tired. Basil had been right. He was nothing but filth. Spoiled and poisoned, toxic to all he touched.

"Tut tut, Dorian." Henry mounted the stairs, making his way up to the attic. "Alan Campbell. He is no longer an assistant, but a chemist with his own shop. And a wife and two children."

Dorian had to take Henry's word for it. Once he used up his lovers or lost interest, he didn't bother to keep a tally of their life accomplishments.
